Harmful Ants

If you didn’t already know, over 12,000 different ant species have been identified as existing in the world right now. Because of that, having Ants as pests comes with a variety of different risks. Depending on the type of species that is present and it’s often difficult to identify them without a pest expert.

For example, Pharaoh Ants, which are notorious indoor pests, are only two millimetres long – and often go undetected. They are present in the warmer months, in homes, grocery stores, apartments, and hotels across the UK.

All Ants are renowned for transmitting serious bacterial and fungal organisms. However, Pharaoh Ants are infamous for carrying disease. With their sharp, pincer-like jaws they can easily bite and infect humans and pets.

What Sort of Diseases do Ants Transmit?

Ant Stings

Ants stings are often associated with serious symptoms for people with allergens to ant venom.

Particularly in Children, pests like the Bullet ant can infect you with Poneratoxin: something which causes extreme pain, cold sweats, nausea, and vomiting.

On top of the initial side effect, if the bite isn’t properly attended to, through cleanliness and disinfectant, it can cause secondary harmful infections.

These instances could even be life threatening.

In 2018, Earth Matters revealed that in your lifetime, you are more likely to be killed by an Ant than a Shark: with around 20 – 50 being killed by Ants every year in Africa alone, and more than 80 people were killed worldwide by red ants alone.

Foodborne Diseases

On top of the initial risk of sting related diseases – some species of Ant are also known for contaminating foods with a variety of other diseases.

The Pharaoh Ant, for example, is known for carrying diseases such as E. coli, Salmonella and staphylococcus: and could transmit it to you at any time using its sharp jaws.

And in infants, young children, older adults, and other people with weak immune systems; the development of diseases like Salmonella could be dangerous, and perhaps even life-threatening.

These Ants are seeking food. Whether you are a homeowner, business or restaurant owner, when these ants inevitably find your food, they could be contaminating your food without you even knowing.

Asthma, Allergens and Respiratory Problems

On top of the transmission of diseases and illnesses, research also suggests that having Ant’s present in your house can contribute to respiratory problems.

The biggest culprit to date being the Pharaoh Ant, and an allergy specialist at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) says household ants can trigger asthma symptoms; especially in families with young children who have allergies.
